In 1962, "Mother Teresa" brought
the first child for treatment to Dr. Balabhai Nanavati Hospital.
This marked the beginning of a long and lasting relationship
between her and the hospital. The nuns of Asha Daan regularly
bring ailing children to the hospital for medical treatment.
"Mother Teresa" was a great source of encouragement
to the Hospital trustees, regularly visiting the Hospital on
her trips to Mumbai and even making time on different occasions
to inaugurate new departments and facilities. It was on her
last visit to the Hospital to inaugurate the underground auditorium
that the Chairman promised that when the new Paediatric Centre
was built he would name it after her. We are happy to see that
this promise has become a reality. The Centre will support a
separate Children’s Ward where disadvantaged children
will be treated free of cost or at highly subsidised rates while
receiving the same quality of medical care.
