The Pathology Department of any hospital is very important since it helps clinicians reach a diagnosis in order to treat a patient more efficiently. In Dr. Balabhai Nanavati Hospital, a central Laboratory works for 24 hours, all 365 days of the year. The department itself does the cash collection, sample collection and despatch of reports. The department offers a number of health check-up schemes that will help evaluate the status of your health. A pathologist, a post-graduate student in pathology or a biochemist is always available to guide patients through the different blood tests that may be required.

As the laboratory is well equipped with a highly skilled staff, reports of tests like blood gases and electrolytes can be given within 10 - 15 minutes time. As all instruments are calibrated daily, the reports of tests like prothrombin time, PTT, Hb, Platelet etc are also prepared in an hour's time. Most of the biochemical tests are also ready within 2 to 3 hours. For giving good quality reports in time, the Pathology department has 2 instruments for all tests. For instance, the laboratory has 3 blood gas machines from two different companies, 2 haematology cell counters one from Coulter and another from Transasia, 2 fully automated chemistry analysers one from Dade and other from Olympus.

List of Services provided by the Pathology Department

The laboratory has recently added few specialized tests. Tests like HIV, HbsAg, HCV are done daily by microwell ELISA, while more specific tests like tumour markers for instance, total and free PSA, and AFP are done in batches. Tests like IgG and IgM for TB, IgG for ANA, Ferritin, WESTERN BLOT HIV etc are also done in batches.

Test like Ig M Leptospira , IgM and IgG for Dengue and HAV IgM have a good workload during the seasons, are also carried out throughout the year. Microbiological testing of bacterial cultures, fungal cultures etc. is carried out taking utmost precautions by handling the samples carefully and preventing contamination of the samples. Sub-cultures and biochemical tests for identification of organisms is also done in microbiology department. As. patients are not responding well to the treatment for infection by acid-fast bacilli, we have started culturing AFB with Anti-TB drugs.
