Dr. Balabhai Nanavati Hospital was the first private charitable
hospital in Mumbai to have a dedicated Cancer Centre. The centre
was established in January 1980, and inaugurated by Mother Teresa.
Since its inception, all major cancer surgical procedures have
been carried out at the Department. A dedicated 14-bed cancer
ward, a Cobalt Radiation Therapy unit, and a nuclear medicine
department were established. The Department of Oncology has
earned a reputation for itself in the management of head and
neck cancer. Approximately 250 major, and 200 minor, operations
are carried out in the department annually.
