Breast cancer is considered to be the most common form of cancer in urban societies all over the world. Regular mammograms are one of the best weapons against breast cancer - a screening mammogram can detect cancer at its earlier stages, up to two years before a lump can be felt. Upto 90% of breast cancers can be treated successfully, if they are detected early, and have not spread beyond the breast.

Most studies recommend an initial mammography at the age of 40. Women over the age of 40 years have a higher risk of getting cancer. Also if there is a history of breast cancer in the immediate family (mother or sister) member, the chances of getting cancer are increased. If a woman has already a cancer in one breast, there is a higher risk of acquiring cancer in the same or the other breast and must undergo regular follow-up.

Facilities available with the Department

The Mammography Centre at Dr. Balabhai Nanavati Hospital is equipped with a Philips Mammo Diagnost BC. The x-ray dose and image quality of the unit are optimized by OPDOSE, while OPCOMP determines the optimum degree of compression needed to produce uniform tautness based on individual breast characteristics.
Mammograms are a set of radiographs that can detect microcalcification and small breast lumps. Usually two radiographs of each breast are obtained. For one view, a beam is sent from above to a film holder placed under the breast, the second is taken from the side towards the centre. To get as accurate a picture as possible, the breast is flattened against a hard flat device.
Mammograms are safe. Like all x-rays, it involves exposure to radiation, but the amount is small, even less than that used in a dental x-ray. No preparation is required for mammography. However, it should be ideally scheduled 2 to 3 days after the menstrual period to reduce the pain caused by compression. On the day of examination, women should avoid application of perfumes, talcum powders and deodorants
