Dr. Balabhai Nanavati Hospital was the first hosptial in the western suburbs of Mumbai to have a casualty care in the hospital.

The General Surgery Department boasts of one of the modern and well equipped departments. All types of General Surgical- major and minor operatons are performed including Laparoscopic and Endoscopic Surgery, Kidney Transplants (both live and cadeveric) microscopic surgery etc.

Surgical procedures are done on OPD and day care basis.

The Department of Surgery was established right from the inception of the Hospital in 1951. Today the hospital on the surgical side has the latest modern equipment like Whole body MRI, CT Scan, Cobolt, Dialyzing Unit, Gamma Camera, ultrasound cine angiography equipment with which open heart surgery, kidney transplants (Donor being relatives/cadavers), percutaneous lithotripsy etc. can be performed.

To perform various specialized advanced surgical procedures, the Hospital has 12 surgical operation theatres equipped with monitors, respirators, latest anaesthetic equipment which include central gas and oxygen and suction pipe lines.
There are also operating microscopes, endoscopes, and resuscitation equipment including defibrillator and other specialized instruments to cater to the needs of the surgical specialties.
This department encompasses general and gastro-intestinal surgery, surgical oncology, trauma and surgical critical care.
