The “Telemedicine Department” was commissioned at Dr. Balabhai Nanavati Hospital on August 29, 2006 by Mr. Priyam Jhaveri- Vice Chairman,. The Hospital is one of Mumbai’s premier health care institutions and has now joined the group of selected top hospitals of India using this most modern technology to deliver health care services to remote hospital at Silvassa (U.T.).The Chief administrator of Silvassa – Daman Mr. R. Telemedicine is a facility by which patients at a remote village or hospital can have direct communication with all the multi-specialty doctors nationally as well as internationally via the T.V. / computer screen. The patients can now consult with doctors at the hospital without having to visit them personally. The medical fraternity at Dr. Balabhai Nanavati Hospital can diagnose the disease by examining patient by tele-stethoscope and other such high end equipment as well as provide guidance for treatment at the remote centres or at the Hospital.

The Indian Health Service is moving rapidly in deploying state-of-the-art technology to bring primary care and specialty medicine to remote locations to reduce geographic barriers between remote, smaller communities and health care providers. For example, clinical engineers are now equipping small remote villages in interior Maharashtra and other surrounding areas with tele-medicine systems to provide transmission of digital images of patients’ ear drums, skin conditions, and even tonsils to distant health care providers. Tele-medicine also enables small rural communities to communicate during emergencies with hospital consultants through video conferencing when transportation is difficult or impossible (especially in the current road conditions & distances).
